Terms of use

Last updated October 8, 2026

Effective date: October 8, 2026

1. Acceptance of these terms

The Parent Money File website at TheParentMoneyFile.ca (the "Site") is operated from Ontario, Canada, as The Parent Money File ("we," "us," or "our"). By using the Site, reading its content, using its tools, or buying its products, you agree to these Terms of Use. If you do not agree, please do not use the Site.

2. Educational information only, not advice

Everything on the Site is general educational information. It is not legal, financial, tax, investment, accounting, or other professional advice. We are not lawyers, accountants, financial planners, or financial advisors. Using the Site does not create a lawyer-client, advisor-client, or any other professional relationship between you and us.

Every family's situation is different, and the right course of action depends on facts we do not know. Before you make decisions about a parent's money, property, legal documents, taxes, benefits, or estate, speak with a qualified professional licensed in your province or territory.

3. Accuracy, updates, and provincial differences

We work to keep the Site accurate and current, but we cannot guarantee that all content is complete, correct, or up to date.

  • Rules change. Laws, government benefits, tax rules, and institutional procedures change over time. Information that was accurate when published may no longer be accurate.
  • Provinces differ. Rules on powers of attorney, guardianship, probate, long-term care, and benefits vary by province and territory. Unless a guide says otherwise, content describes Ontario.
  • Review dates. Guides show a "last reviewed" date. Always check that date, and confirm current rules with official government sources or a qualified professional before acting.

Where possible, we link to the official sources our content is based on. If content on the Site conflicts with an official source, the official source governs.

4. We do not answer individual questions

We do not respond to questions about your personal situation or your parent's situation, whether sent by email, contact form, social media, or any other channel. We cannot tell you what to do in a specific case. If you contact us, we may reply only to direct you to the appropriate type of professional. The Site does not have a comment section.

5. Tools, calculators, and templates

The Site may offer calculators, checklists, workbooks, spreadsheets, and other tools, whether free or paid.

  • Calculator results are estimates based on the numbers you enter and the assumptions shown with the tool. They are not recommendations.
  • Templates and checklists are general organizing aids. They may not cover every account, document, requirement, or step that applies to your situation.
  • You are responsible for the information you enter and for how you use the results.

Our tools are designed so that the information you enter stays on your own device. We do not ask you to submit your parent's account numbers or financial details to us.

6. Digital products

When you buy a digital product from the Site, you receive a personal, non-transferable license to use it for your own family's affairs. You may download, print, and fill in the product for your own use, and share completed copies with family members, professionals, or institutions involved in your parent's affairs. You may not resell, redistribute, share, or publish the blank product, use it in a commercial service for clients, or remove our name or copyright notices.

Digital products are educational and organizational tools, not professional advice.

7. Intellectual property

The Site's guides, tools, templates, designs, graphics, and the name The Parent Money File belong to us or are used with permission, and are protected by copyright and other laws. You may read the Site, print guides for your personal use, and share links to our pages. You may not copy, republish, sell, or adapt our content without our written permission.

The Site links to government websites, legislation, and other outside resources. We do not control those sites and are not responsible for their content, accuracy, availability, or privacy practices. If the Site includes affiliate links or referral arrangements, we will say so on the page where they appear. A link is not an endorsement of any product, service, or professional.

9. Email and privacy

If you join our email list, we will send you only the emails you signed up for. Every email includes our contact information and an unsubscribe link, in line with Canada's Anti-Spam Legislation. Our privacy policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and your choices.

10. No warranties and limitation of liability

The Site, its content, tools, and products are provided "as is" and "as available," without warranties of any kind, to the fullest extent permitted by law.

To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any loss or damage arising from your use of, or reliance on, the Site, its content, tools, or products. This includes financial loss, tax penalties, legal costs, missed deadlines or benefits, and decisions made about a parent's affairs.

If we are found liable despite these terms, our total liability to you is limited to the amount you paid us for the product in question, or $50 CAD if you paid nothing. Nothing in these terms limits any rights you have that cannot be limited under applicable consumer protection law.

11. General terms

Your responsibility. You agree to use the Site lawfully and to indemnify us against claims arising from your misuse of the Site or your breach of these terms.

Governing law. These terms are governed by the laws of the Province of Ontario and the federal laws of Canada that apply there. Disputes will be handled in the courts of Ontario, unless consumer protection law gives you the right to another forum.

Changes. We may update these terms. The effective date at the top shows when they last changed. Continuing to use the Site after a change means you accept the updated terms.

Severability. If any part of these terms is found unenforceable, the rest remains in effect.

Contact. Questions about these terms: [email protected]. As noted in section 4, we cannot answer questions about individual situations.
