Stage 7: After a parent has passed away
Settle the estate
You might be here if: Your parent has passed away, and you're dealing with the accounts, the paperwork, and the estate.
When a parent has passed away, a power of attorney ends, and the job changes hands. The person named in the will takes over. In Ontario, that person is called the estate trustee, more commonly known as the executor.
Often it is the same adult child who managed things before, now with a new role, new rules, and a long list of tasks. The guides here walk through that list: who to notify, what happens to bank accounts, pensions, and registered accounts, the final tax returns, probate, and paying out the estate.
It is a lot, and it usually takes longer than people expect. We will take it one step at a time.
