Welcome

Start here

If you're here, you're probably helping a parent manage their money, or you can see that day coming. Maybe it started with a missed bill. Maybe a bank asked for a document you've never heard of. Maybe a parent is moving into care next month and you're trying to work out how to pay for it.

Whatever brought you here, you're in the right place, and you don't have to figure it all out today.

How the guides are organized

Helping a parent with money tends to happen in stages. We've organized every guide around seven of them, from getting prepared to settling the estate. You can start at whichever stage matches your life right now, and every guide points you to the next step when you're ready.

Guides that belong to more than one stage are also grouped by topic, like power of attorney, care costs, or taxes. And if you know exactly what you're looking for, use the search button at the top of any page.

What makes these guides different

Each guide explains a real task from start to finish: what it involves, what you'll need, what to expect, and where things commonly go sideways. We base every guide on official sources and link to them, so you can check for yourself. Every guide shows the province it covers and the date it was last reviewed.

What we can't do

We explain how things generally work. We can't give advice about your family's situation, and we don't answer individual questions. When a decision needs a lawyer, an accountant, or a financial planner, we'll tell you, and explain what kind of professional to look for.
